BECKETT

S ophia takes the first half-hour of her arrival at my home to run through every room and touch everything she can reach. Then she proceeds to pass out on the couch in a record thirty-seven seconds upon sitting down, or at least that's what Lily tells me.

I scoop her up in my arms and carry her down the hall to the smallest of my bedrooms with her mom in tow. "She's a little ball of energy," I note quietly as Lily pulls back the covers on the bed.

"Yeah, well, someone gave her a giant bowl of pudding," she says with a pointed look.

Oh. I guess I'm supposed to take responsibility for that. "No idea who that could have been."

With Sophia ensconced safely in bed, Lily leans down to press a kiss against the forehead of her sweet little girl before backing out of her room.

"Thank you again," she says as she closes the door behind her. "After listening to all the kids together tonight, I'm not sure I would have made it at James and Elle's."

After their squabble, the two of us grabbed Sophia and made a break for my truck. Lily grabbed a couple of suitcases from their car and we drove down the road to my place. It was only about two miles away, but it was enough distance that we wouldn't have to worry about the inevitable argument making its way back into the kitchen to us.

"Oh, shoot," Lily exclaims when she opens both of the suitcases.

"What's up?" I raise an eyebrow, trying to take a peek at what she's looking at.

Lily shuts the suitcase she's looking into and then plops down on the couch. "I guess in my haste to get away from James', I grabbed two of Sophia's suitcases instead of any of mine." She peers out the window at the black night sky and shakes her head. "I guess it's too late to go back and grab one, huh?"

I look at the bedroom door where we just left Sophia. "We could probably go back real quick and grab the right suitcase if you want. It's right

down the road. She'll probably never know we're gone." I go to the table by the door where I left my keys, but before I pick them up, Lily stops me.

"No, it's fine, don't worry about it. I don't want Sophia to wake up in a strange home and not be able to find me. I can sleep in what I'm wearing."

She looks down at the shirt and leggings she has on. "This could be comfortable, right?"

She looks pretty comfortable to me, but if I were going to go to sleep, I definitely wouldn't want to be wearing all that junk. "If you don't want to wear all that," I gesture to the clothes she has on, "I can lend you some of my stuff. It'll be a little big, but it's just for the evening."

Lily grins at me and then stands back up. "A little big? You don't think I can fill out your pants? Our waists have got to be the same size.
